Returning NASCAR to North Wilkesboro Speedway - Behind the Scenes of the Parking and Traffic Logistics

This presentation will aim to teach conference attendees how to build and maintain a strong public/private partnership between an events facility like North Wilkesboro Speedway and, state/local traffic management agencies like the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, North Carolina Dept. of Transportation and HNTB corporation.  The presentation will be a roundtable exercise including at least one member from each entity outlined above and will look to teach conference attendees how this group put together a complete and flawless parking and traffic management plan in approximately 180 days for the 2023 NASCAR All-Star race at North Wilkesboro Speedway after a 27-year hiatus from NASCAR racing.  Presenter will give an overview of the planning that was done leading up to race week.  Members of each traffic management agency will describe there agencies role in building and executing the overall plan and the challenges that were faced in doing so.

  • Teach participants how to step-by-step build a flawless parking and traffic management plan for a national sporting event.

  • Allow round-table presenters to share with participants their agencies role in executing an event with the collaboration of multiple agencies.

Tom Vesey, Charlotte Motor Speedway

Tom Vesey is the Director of Guest Services at Charlotte Motor Speedway.  Vesey graduated from Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, NC with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Management with a concentration in Motorsports Management.  A member of the first graduating class of Motorsports Management students, a program created by former Charlotte Motor Speedway President and General Manager Humpy Wheeler, Vesey started his career as an intern at Charlotte Motor Speedway.  Now more than 17 years later, Vesey has grown to become an expert in the world of event traffic and parking logistics through public private partnerships with several state and local law enforcement and traffic agencies.


This conference offers up to 7 CAPP Points towards application and the maximum in Program Type 2 for recertification.
